Cleopatra Fertile Delta Blend
Coffee
This blend from the Red Sea region, includes a commemorative mug. This blend consists of organic Ethiopia Sidamo, Ethiopia Harar, and Yemen Sanani, all originating in some of the oldest coffee growing regions in the world. These coffees are all grown near the Red Sea, and the crops are cultivated and processed today much as they were for centuries. Soon after the discovery of coffee in Ethiopia, it spread to the Arab world via the Red Sea. The Ethiopians probably introduced the drink to Yemen when they invaded and occupied the country for 50 years in the sixth century. It is said the Ethiopians deliberately set up coffee plantations, and soon the Arabs began cultivating the trees themselves. Yemen was the first country to grow coffee commercially. The Yemeni began exporting it after being invaded by the Turks in 1536 through the port of Mokka. Europeans nicknamed all coffee that came through this port “Mocha,” and the name lives on, most notably to in the ubiquitous Mocha-Java. Because Ethiopia and Yemen have similar terrain, the components of the blend are grown on terraced farms between 3,000 feet and 7,000 feet. This, along with the relative dryness of the soil and air produce small, extremely hard beans. This uniquely acidic cup has the pungent, fruity zap of the Yemen Sanani, the smooth richness of the Ethiopian Harar, and the buttery sweetness of the Sidamo.
