Regions & Blends

Africa

The African continent is where coffee first grew wild! One notices “distinctions” in taste between the regions. General speaking you will experience an earthy quality due to Africa’s natural (not washed) processing and hand tending. Common positive attributes are fruitiness, whiny and chocolate notes that linger in the finish, medium body ~ acidity and a strong floral presence. Invigorating!

Blends

A Blend or Mélange is a mixture of different single origin varietal coffees from around the world. The coffee is usually roasted separately to its optimal roast, and then blended. Blending in a strategic way can yield a brew larger than the sum its parts. Carefully selected coffees based on their varied positive attributes can work magically as many different flavors are combined. Our most popular coffees are blends!

Pacific Rim/Asia

The Dutch brought coffee to this part of the world in the 17th century! Some of the original plantations still in production are in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. The Pacific Rim is now the fourth largest coffee growing area in the world. Rich volcanic soil and lush conditions yield coffees that are typically full flavored, syrupy rich with heavy body and very low in acidity. Popular at OCC as a darker roast.

The Americas

Coffee was transplanted to Central and South America and it's Islands during the Colonial eras. The superior arabican coffee is grown at high volcanic altitudes in shade rain forest through the equator zone. Many of the original cultivar classics such as Bourbon first harvested are still in production at our farm partners. This regions coffee is very familiar to most, because most of the world's production comes from here. General taste profile: Rich-pleasant acidity and balanced flavors. The biggest differential in flavor beside species and growing conditions are the type of milling used by the co-operatives. Wet process through a light fermentation yields a lingering sweet creamy finish. Alternatively, natural patio drying in the sun delivers a crisp clean finish. Enjoy!
